WAS MAGMA-WATER INTERACTION WHAT CAUSED AMBAE'S 2017 ERUPTION TO STOP
BUILDING A SMALL CONE AND PRODUCE WIDESPREAD DAMAGING ASHFALL?

This project is expected to involve travel to Vanuatu for field sampling of
ash successions, coupled with analysis of ash morphology using a range of
techniques (microscopy, SEM, xCT, statistical analysis). There are staged
goals to the research; characterize in the ash the signature of the change
in observed eruption style, and infer the shift in eruptive process that
produced this signature. Additional goals are to use ash morphology to
provide information on eruption energetics, and to relate the processes of
Ambaeâ??s eruption to other eruptions, and other tephra deposits, elsewhere
in the world. Ambae's entry at Bulletin of Global Volcanism:

This work will be done in collaboration with GNS Science NZ, and Vanuatu
Meteorology and Geohazards Department. We seek applications from
high-performing Masters and BSc(honours) students able to compete
successfully for a University of Otago doctoral scholarship (

Ability to work in tropical field conditions is needed for fieldwork.
Experience with or ability and interest to learn techniques of particle
analysis and interpretation are important.

The student will be based in the Otago Department of Geology, with
co-supervision by Graham Leonard of GNS Science, Avalon office. Send
inquiries to james.white@xxxxxxxxxxx
