Funded PhD position in planetary volcanism at The University of Texas at
San Antonio

The Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Texas at San
Antonio is looking for a highly motivated PhD student interested in doing
high-temperature experimental work on Martian lava analogs, supported by
the NASA-funded project "Fast and/or Furious? Nature and Emplacement
History of Lavas Erupted on Mars", a collaboration between Dr. Alex Sehlke
(BAERI / NASA Ames) and Dr. Alan Whittington (The University of Texas at
San Antonio). Although the emphasis is on laboratory experiments using
rheometers and calorimeters, there will be opportunities for fieldwork (at
terrestrial volcanoes) and research on related topics, including remote
sensing studies of lava morphology.

Candidates should hold an MS degree in petrology/volcanology or a closely
related field. Desirable qualifications include experience with experiments
and a passion for thermodynamics. The PhD program in Environmental Science
and Engineering provides additional coursework in Experimental Design and
Analysis, Earth System Science, Statistics, as well as geoscience graduate
classes in Remote Sensing, Volcanology, etc. Full funding is guaranteed for
three years, with a fourth year of support anticipated. UTSA is an Equal
Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and committed to
creating an environment that affirms diversity across a variety of
dimensions, including ethnicity/race, gender identity and expression,
veterans and individuals with disabilities. Minorities, women, veterans,
and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

For more information please contact Dr. Whittington (
alan.whittington@xxxxxxxx), who will be at GSA. Meet me at the UTSA
booth(#649) on Sunday and Tuesday lunchtimes, and other times by
appointment. Both PI's will be at AGU.
