A PhD student is sought for a new NSF award to Cathy Busby (University of
California, Davis) in a collaborative proposal with Keith Putirka
(California State University, Fresno). Potential applicants should contact
Cathy Busby for details, and qualified students will be encouraged to apply
to UC Davis Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences for admission in
Fall, 2020. The PhD studentâ??s support and fieldwork will begin in summer
2020.

Our work examines the controls of Walker Lane faults on magmatism, linking
temporal variation in subsidence rates, as well as pull-apart basin sizes,
with vent types, eruptive styles, eruptive volumes and rates, and the depth
extent of volcanic conduits. We will test whether tectonic events control:
(1) depths and temperatures of magma storage, and (2) the types of mantle
sources that deliver mafic melts to the crust. This study will yield
insights that cannot be gained by examining modern volcanoes, whose
structural controls are buried by volcanic and sedimentary deposits (e.g.
active volcanic centers in Walker Lane pull-apart basins such as Lassen,
Long Valley and Coso).

Busby seeks candidates with a strong background in geologic mapping,
preferably with an MS degree. Geologic mapping will include volcanic
stratigraphic analysis and structural analysis. Laboratory work will
include petrography, geochemistry, mineral chemistry, and
40Ar-39Argeochronology.
Published papers on our work in the Sierra Nevada/Walker Lane are posted at

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UC Davis has 25 full
faculty members, 14 scientists and academic federation members, and
numerous postdocs and associates, with a high proportion of females on
faculty. A large number of graduate students and undergraduate geology
majors help to create a vibrant community in the department.
