The PostDoc position is with the IMOâ??s Geoscience Research Group in the Division of Processing and Research, where multiple international and domestic research and monitoring projects are carried out. The work will involve collaboration with other ChEESE partners, in particular visits and training at the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC). The position will also involve collaborations with other already on-going national and international projects. *Description* IMO will take advantage of the Centre of Excellence to improve its internal research on seismic simulations, seismic hazard, volcanic ash modeling and volcanic hazard. The IMO will use the results of the project to produce new physics-based services for the scientific community and stakeholders. The PostDoc will simultaneously work on three ChEESE pilot demonstrators (PD): (1) High-resolution volcanic plume simulation (2) Probabilistic volcanic hazard assessment (3) High-resolution volcanic ash dispersal forecast Further description of the ChEESE project is given on its website: https://cheese-coe.eu/ Home | ChEESE - Centre of Excellence for Exascale Supercomputing in the area of the Solid Earth <https://cheese-coe.eu/> cheese-coe.eu The main objective of ChEESE is to establish a new Center of Excellence (CoE) in the domain of Solid Earth (SE) targeting the preparation of 10 Community flagship European codes for the upcoming pre-Exascale (2020) and Exascale (2022) supercomputers. and through contacts below. *Requirements:* - PhD in geophysics, physics, computational sciences or related topics. - Research experience of independent and original research, preferably in physical volcanology, numerical modelling of volcanic processes, tephra dispersal simulations, atmospheric sciences. - Demonstrated research abilities in the form of publications, posters and presentations. - Proficiency in computer programming and handling large datasets. - Good cooperative and social skills, the ability to work both independently and in a team. - Proficiency in written and spoken English. - HPC experience and proficiency is an asset. The values of the Icelandic Meteorological Office are: Knowledge, Reliability, Progressive seeking and Cooperation. The values are used as a frame of reference in the hiring process. The IMO hires according to the Equal Rights Policy of the Icelandic government. *Application and Deadlines* Application deadline is *22 April 2019*. The two-year PostDoc position at IMO is expected to commence in late spring/early summer 2019 (est. 1 June) The application contains: - 1-2 page letter of intent, stating your qualifications and interests in the project, how it aligns with your talents, your expectations for the PostDoc research and how you foresee your contribution to the project - Detailed Curriculum Vitae outlining education, past work experience and publications, in particular past research experience - A copy of an official PhD certificate (or confirmation of planned PhD defence) - A copy of official transcripts of M.S. and Ph.D. courses, and other relevant courses if any. - Recommendation letters (at least one) and contact information of references Please email as attachment, or make available online via shared link, the above required information arranged in an organized manner to Dr. Sara Barsotti (sara@xxxxxxxx) with the subject â??ChEESE-IMO Volcanic PostDoc applicationâ??. *Contacts, Inquiries, and Practical Aspects* Further inquiries about the position are welcome. Please contact Dr. Sara Barsotti for scientific aspects directly by e-mail: sara@xxxxxxxx, and Borgar Ã?var Axelsson (borgar@xxxxxxxx) for practical aspects of the position. Salary will be according to the current collective wage and salary agreement between the Union of choice and the Minister of Finance. We note that candidates for the position that satisfy the eligibility criteria as â??foreign expertsâ?? will have an opportunity of a 25% discount on salary income tax during the appointment. For more information see https://www.rsk.is/english/individuals/foreign-experts All applications will be answered when a decision has been made. *The Icelandic Meteorological Office* *The IMO is a public institution under the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources. Since 2009 the main purpose of IMO is to: (i) Monitor all natural processes and hazards and provide warnings and forecasts of hazardous events with the aim of minimizing societal vulnerability; (ii) perform long-term archiving of data on natural processes, such as weather and climate, glaciers, rivers, crustal movements, magmatic processes and other environmental factors that fall under IMOâ??s responsibility; (iii) conduct research on the physics of the Earth, atmosphere and sea, in particular on earthquake- and volcanic processes and hazards, glaciers and avalanches, ice-volcano interaction, atmospheric and hydrological processes and climate change, as well as perform research on sustainable use of natural resources; (iv) carry out risk assessments of natural hazards upon request by the government.* *To fulfill its purpose, IMO conducts research on earthquake and volcanic processes and hazards, glacial studies, ice-volcano interaction, meteorological and hydrological processes and climate change. The institute also focuses on research in multiparameter geophysical monitoring to develop better forecasts of hazardous events. To that end, IMO operates dense, multidisciplinary national monitoring networks in situ, including seismic-, GNSS-, strainmeter-, weather-, hydrological- and geochemical networks, and seismic and infrasound arrays. Also remote sensing networks such as weather radars and lidars. In addition, IMO conducts extensive manned monitoring of glacial rivers, -floods (jökulhlaup) and -mass-balance, carries out volcanic gas measurements and participates in nationwide GNSS campaign measurements.* *The institute has a long-term advisory role with Civil Protection and serves as a state volcano observatory with regard to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The institute participates in international weather and aviation alert systems, such as with the London Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC). IMO has 140 full time employees, 83% with a university degree, of which 18% are at Ph.D. level. 60 are involved in research and 30 in monitoring and research activities. 40% of the staff are female.* *IMO has lead and participated in several EU projects on seismic and volcanic hazards. Recent European projects in Earth sciences include EPOS-IP, where the IMO leads the Icelandic participation, NERA, SAFER,REAKT, ARISTOTLE and VOLUME. IMO was a co-leader of the FUTUREVOLC volcano supersite project and hosts and manages the supersite data service. IMO is currently leading the H2020 project â??European Network of Observatories and Research Infrastructures for Volcanologyâ?? (EUROVOLC, 2018-2020) and more projects on seismic hazard are on the horizon.* ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI).
