*Postdoc position on magma propagation modeling, Volcano Team, ISTerre,
Chambéry, France*

The postdoc position is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR)
in the frame of a French-German cooperation (ANR-DFG NLE 2018). The work
will be carried out at ISTerre, in the Volcano Team located at Chambéry.

The entire project is called "MagmaPropagator: A forecasting tool for
location and time of volcanic eruptions due to off-conduit magma
propagationâ??, co-PI is Eleonora Rivalta from GFZ, Potsdam, Germany. The
goal is to combine state-of-the-art mechanical magma propagation approaches
with statistical tools (data assimilation and Monte Carlo inversions) to
forecast the location and time of a fissure eruption following magma
propagation below the surface. We foresee application to three cases: Campi
Flegrei and Etna in Italy, and Piton de la Fournaise, La Réunion.

Responsibilities:

The postdoc hired at ISTerre will focus on the improvement of numerical
models for magma propagation. In particular, the main objective is to
develop a fully coupled viscous flow and rock fracturing numerical model
allowing to solve both for magma path and velocity. The post-doc will also
perform analogue experiments to validate the numerical developments during
long visits at GFZ. Based on its interest, the post-doc might also be
involved in other part of the project as the development of efficient
strategies for geophysical data assimilation based on physical models for
magma propagation. The work will be performed in close collaboration with our
partners Dr. Eleonora Rivalta at GFZ, Germany and Dr. Francesco Maccaferri
at INGV Osservatorio Vesuviano, Italy. Developments will be applied, tested
and validated using observations available at three test volcanoes in
collaboration with the three observatories involved (INGV- Osservatorio
Vesuviano, INGV-Osservatorio Etneo, OVPF in La Réunion).

Qualification:

The applicant should have a strong background in either Physical
Volcanology, Geophysics or Applied Mathematics and have an interest in the
physics of volcanoes. Computational skills are required. The candidate
should also have excellent communication skills (good written and spoken
English, good presentation and writing skills).

Contact:

The position may start between May 2019 and April 2020. The contract will
last for 18 months with a possible extension over 6 additional months.
Further information can be obtained from Dr. Virginie Pinel. Please send
your application in English by email to Virginie.Pinel@xxxxxxxxxxx. The
application should comprise cover letter with a statement of research
experience and motivation as well as a CV including names and contact
information for at least two potential references to
*Virginie.Pinel@xxxxxxxxxxx
<Virginie.Pinel@xxxxxxxxxxx>* . Examination of applications will start
15.04.2019 and last until the position is filled.
