The work will be carried out at ISTerre, in the Volcano Team located at Chambéry. The entire project is called "MagmaPropagator: A forecasting tool for location and time of volcanic eruptions due to off-conduit magma propagationâ??, co-PI is Eleonora Rivalta from GFZ, Potsdam, Germany. The goal is to combine state-of-the-art mechanical magma propagation approaches with statistical tools (data assimilation and Monte Carlo inversions) to forecast the location and time of a fissure eruption following magma propagation below the surface. We foresee application to three cases: Campi Flegrei and Etna in Italy, and Piton de la Fournaise, La Réunion. Responsibilities: The postdoc hired at ISTerre will focus on the improvement of numerical models for magma propagation. In particular, the main objective is to develop a fully coupled viscous flow and rock fracturing numerical model allowing to solve both for magma path and velocity. The post-doc will also perform analogue experiments to validate the numerical developments during long visits at GFZ. Based on its interest, the post-doc might also be involved in other part of the project as the development of efficient strategies for geophysical data assimilation based on physical models for magma propagation. The work will be performed in close collaboration with our partners Dr. Eleonora Rivalta at GFZ, Germany and Dr. Francesco Maccaferri at INGV Osservatorio Vesuviano, Italy. Developments will be applied, tested and validated using observations available at three test volcanoes in collaboration with the three observatories involved (INGV- Osservatorio Vesuviano, INGV-Osservatorio Etneo, OVPF in La Réunion). Qualification: The applicant should have a strong background in either Physical Volcanology, Geophysics or Applied Mathematics and have an interest in the physics of volcanoes. Computational skills are required. The candidate should also have excellent communication skills (good written and spoken English, good presentation and writing skills).
