Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the following Research Topic
launched in Frontiers in Earth Sciences - Volcanology
"The Impact of Open Science for Evaluation of Volcanic Hazards"
https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/9712/the-impact-of-open-science-for-evaluation-of-volcanic-hazards

In recent years, we have witnessed a growing interest for promoting Open
Science within the Earth Sciences community. This includes being able to
locate and analyze open data, to access open processing platforms and share
research products within the scientific community and with stakeholders.

We propose a collection of papers evidencing the impact of Open Science on
the advancement of volcano research and volcanic hazard assessment. Volcano
research in all fields directly or indirectly supports the assessment of
volcanic hazards and risk mitigation. There is a need for scientific
advancements in volcano research to be rapidly taken up by stakeholders and
decision-makers, including staff at volcano observatories and civil
protection agencies. The adoption of an Open Science approach to volcano
monitoring, promotes rapid, high quality products and mutually beneficial
international collaboration, eventually leading to timely and increased
societal benefits.

This Frontiers Research Topic welcomes contributions demonstrating how an
Open Science approach promotes advanced multidisciplinary investigations of
volcanic systems, including but not limited to:

â?¢ Contributions presenting and discussing the progress and state-of-the-art
in the scientific exploitation and interpretation of remote sensing and
in-situ data for volcanic hazard studies, using open data, open
exploitation platforms, virtual research environments, etc;
â?¢ Contributions comprising scientific results and technological aspects,
highlighting the support of specific projects and international
partnerships to Open Science in volcanology, including open access
volcano-related databases;
â?¢ Contributions that demonstrate how Open volcano Science is taken up by
decision makers for Disaster Risk Management and how it can benefit the
assessment and the reduction of the environmental, economic and social
impacts.

The collection also wishes to highlight the added value that such Open
Science approach brings in mitigating volcanic risk to developing
countries, where access to non-open data, codes and resources is currently
severely limited.
This Research Topic is aimed at being very interdisciplinary in
Volcanology, reflecting the nature of the Research Topics collections of
Frontiers. Please note that fee-waiver may be applied
