The University of Alaska Fairbanks is seeking a tenure-track faculty member
at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in using
geodetic techniques to monitor changes of the earthâ??s surface. We seek a
scientist interested in building a long-term research program that builds
on the extensive facilities and programs of the UAF Geophysical Institute,
in particular, the Alaska Volcano Observatory and the Alaska Earthquake
Center. We particularly value an ability to work collaboratively with other
faculty and a desire to support our student programs.

The successful applicant will teach a quarter-time load of 3-4 credits per
year in the Department of Geosciences. Teaching will likely include both
foundational geophysics courses and discipline-specific geodesy course(s).
This position is expected to attract and mentor graduate and undergraduate
students and involve them in research.

The remainder of the position (three-quarters-time) consists of building an
applied research program at the Geophysical Institute. The successful hire
is expected to use the start-up period to develop a vibrant research
program as well as sustainable funding to support it. Substantial research
support is available for qualified candidates through the Alaska Earthquake
Center and the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Depending on the needs of the
new hire, long-term support from these facilities could include salary,
staff, hardware, and/or support for students or postdocs. Candidates are
strongly encouraged to elaborate on any research interests specific to
real-time characterization of large earthquakes and/or volcanic systems
using ground-based geodetic methods.
