Dear Colleagues,

We wish to call to your attention to the USGS Mendenhall
postdoctoral research opportunity, *Next-generation monitoring to rapidly
characterize eruption hazards*:
https://geology.usgs.gov/postdoc/opps/2019/17-15%20Van%20Eaton.htm

The U.S. Geological Survey seeks an innovative scientist to develop a plan
of research targeting geophysical signals from volcanic lightning and
infrasound. Proposed projects may involve a range of topics, including but
not limited to:

   - Investigating eruption processes that produce
electrical/acoustic signals in the atmosphere, in context with satellite
observations (e.g., linking lightning and infrasound with multiple
datastreams such as satellite, seismic data, and analysis of deposits)
   - Developing a next-generation monitoring strategy by
leveraging existing lightning and infrasound networks, and embedding more
   sensitive instruments for targeted coverage
   - Examining the potential for small-scale electrical signals
(e.g., continual radio frequency) to become a near-real time monitoring
tool. This could involve, for example, deploying a lightning mapping array
to an Alaskan volcano such as Cleveland or Pavlof

Visit this link for more information and how to apply:
https://geology.usgs.gov/postdoc/opps/basics.html

The application closing date is *Friday January 18th 2019* and applicants
are encouraged to contact research advisors early in the process to discuss
ideas. Mendenhall Fellows are appointed to the USGS for two years
and receive full salary and benefits at the GS-12 level. To be competitive
for this position, candidates must have: (1) US citizenship, (2) completed
their PhD within the past 5 years or less, and (3) a strong background in
volcanology and/or geophysics, including publication in international
journals.
