A new NASA funded opportunity for a highly motivated student interested in
the Ph.D. program is now available in the Department of Geology at the
University of Pittsburgh. The student will be working primarily with
thermal infrared remote sensing data of active volcanoes around the world
with a specific focus on precursory thermal and gas evolution as well as
archival image analysis and possible field-based data acquisition.

The unique aspect of this project is the "Ph.D. in Residence" Program,
which involves spending a period of eight months at three universities
taking coursework and conducting research with the local team members of
the NASA project. The universities involved in the program are: (1) the
University of Alaska Fairbanks, (2) the University of Bristol, UK and (3)
the Université Clermont Auvergne, France.

Interested students are encouraged to apply before the end of the year for
an August 2019 start (an earlier start date is possible). Information on
the Department and the application process can be found on the Department's
website: https://www.geology.pitt.edu/as well as the IVIS Lab's website:
http://ivis.eps.pitt.edu/.

Students with international experience, foreign language skills, remote
sensing/image processing training and a background with computer coding are
especially encouraged to apply.

Specific questions can be directed to: Professor Michael Ramsey (
