PhD studentship in remote sensing of volcanic clouds at Michigan
Technological University

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the Department of
Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences (GMES) at Michigan
Technological University in Houghton, MI, USA.

NOAA has an operational responsibility to track and forecast volcanic
clouds, which are a major aviation hazard with significant economic
consequences. The focus of this project is to improve volcanic hazard
monitoring and forecasting at NOAAâ??s Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAACs),
the National Weather Service (NWS) Pacific Region, the United States
Geological Survey (USGS), and other operational centers, using satellite
instruments on NOAAâ??s Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) spacecraft (
https://www.jpss.noaa.gov/). JPSS instruments are extremely relevant to
volcanic hazard monitoring and forecasting, with applications in
pre-eruptive monitoring, volcanic ash and sulfur dioxide (SO2) detection
and characterization, and volcanic cloud dispersion and transport
forecasting. The student will be trained to use a suite of NOAA and NASA
satellite datasets to detect and quantify volcanic emissions of ash and SO2
and characterize volcanic cloud hazards.

The project will involve collaboration with scientists at NOAA/NESDIS/STAR,
the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory
(ARL), the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, the United States Geological
Survey (USGS) volcano hazards program, and NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center. Up to three years of PhD student support (stipend and tuition) is
available; PhD students are encouraged to apply for other fellowships and
small grants to supplement their funding. The position is available
immediately and ideally the student would be available to start in Spring
2019.

We are interested in candidates with strong backgrounds in either
geosciences or atmospheric sciences. Students already holding a MS degree
are preferred. Prior experience with coding (e.g., Python, IDL, Matlab) and
satellite data processing are highly advantageous. Since NOAA is an
operational agency, this project has a well-defined timeline with key
milestones and deliverables. Interested candidates should send their CV and
a brief statement of interest to Dr. Simon Carn (scarn@xxxxxxx).

Michigan Tech is located in Houghton, MI, USA on the southern shore of Lake
Superior, the largest and most pristine of the Great Lakes. The region
boasts excellent skiing, cycling, kayaking and wilderness activities, and
the cost of living is low. The GMES department hosts one of the largest
graduate volcanology programs in the US. PhD programs are offered in
Geology, Geological Engineering, and Atmospheric Sciences. Interested
candidates can learn more about department programs, courses, and research
at www.mtu.edu/geo.
