This person will work with AVO staff to develop and implement software to improve volcano monitoring and research. Tools developed will analyze real-time data streams collected from instruments deployed on-site and/or remotely viewing volcanoes distributed throughout the state of Alaska. In this role, you will need to consult with AVO researchers and staff to develop, test, and deploy software; troubleshoot operational systems; and collaborate with the AVO IT staff to scope and manage a variety of software development, database, and IT projects. We seek someone with advanced programming and database administration skills who is interested in working in a collaborative, dynamic environment. The Alaska Volcano Observatory is a joint program of the United States Geological Survey, the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys. AVO was formed in 1988, and uses federal, state and university resources to monitor and study Alaska's hazardous volcanoes, predict and record eruptive activity, and mitigate volcanic hazards to life and property. Magmatic bodies have been detected with a wide range of geophysical approaches; however, the volumes, mechanics, chemical signatures and evolution of these bodies remain poorly constrained. Unravelling the architecture and dynamics of the Earth’s lithosphere and answering such fundamental questions as:* *(i) How do we detect magmatic bodies, and determine their volume and geometry? (ii) how can we quantify chemical, mechanical and thermal processes that operate within these magmas, (iii) How can we determine the frequency of magma injections/pulses and melt extraction events? (iv) How do we read the record preserved in minerals, glasses and melts, or in volatile emissions to constrain the timescales and location of magmatic processes?requires investigating the different geochemical, mechanical, and thermal combinations controlled by magma transport, emplacement, storage, and fluxes. Resolving these questions therefore needs cross-disciplinary interactions and collaborations linking field geologists, geochemists, petrologists, volcanologists, geophysicists, and numerical modelers, and we hope all researchers in this area will consider contributing.* We wish to highlight that four great contributions are already available: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/5801/volumes-timescales-and-frequency-of-magmatic-processes-in-the-earths-lithosphere We invite you to contribute to the research themes of this Research Topic in Frontiers in Earth Sciences by 31st October 2018. If you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to generating a cross-disciplinary Research Topic!
