Any analytical, experimental and theoretical/computational approach to understanding the origin and chemical evolution of the Earth and planets will be considered. Some examples include, but are not limited to, cosmochemistry, planetary petrology, non-traditional stable isotope geochemistry, early Earth evolution, volcanology, and interactions of planetary materials with hydrospheres and atmospheres. Preference will be given to candidates whose strengths complement departmental research expertise in Geochemistry and Petrology, Planetary Geoscience, Geophysics, and Climate and Environment. We seek scientists whose research integrates field observations, geochemical analyses, experimental studies, and geochemical theory and/or modeling. We are interested in scientists whose research transcends traditional boundaries in geochemistry, such as between high-temperature and low-temperature geochemistry, geochemistry and geophysics, and terrestrial and planetary. The successful candidate will maintain an active, externally funded research program and enjoy a commitment to teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level. A Ph.D. degree is required, and postdoctoral experience is considered important. Applicants should submit a curriculum vita, descriptions of research and teaching interests and a list of at least three potential referees via the website http://www.interfolio.com/apply/34413. Inquiries and other communications may be directed to: *DEEPS@xxxxxxxxx <DEEPS@xxxxxxxxx>.* *Applications received by November 1st, 2018 will receive full consideration, but the search will remain open until the position is closed or filled. As new leaders of the Commission, we would like to put some renewed energy into the group and its activity! In light of that we are thinking that the upcoming Cities on Volcanoes conference will be an ideal place to meet face-to-face and start to discuss the most urgent and open issues about the group. In principle we should review the members (is somebody missing, not interested anymore, are all the contacts updated?) and then have a view on the road map for the next couple of years. So, we kindly invite you to consider to attend our open chat on Tuesday Sept 4th (directly after the session S01.26 - Volcanic ash: from monitoring to impacts - we are planning to stay in the same room as the session) to go through these points. We know this communication is on short notice but we are hoping you all will find some time to meet the group. Please let us know your willingness to participate (and to keep being part of the commission) by replying to this Doodle Poll: https://doodle.com/poll/ z7ti45ftv649ugpf Even if you are not attending the CoV10 meeting, please fill out the doodle poll so that your voice can be heard. Among them is a complete original set of the “Catalogue of the Active Volcanoes of the World Including Solfatara Fields”, the vintage, numbered series from 1951 thru 1967 edited by the International Volcanological Association. I desire to sell these volumes as a complete set, but as second choice would consider donating the set to a public university library or other U.S. non-profit entity for which the donation can be considered deductible on my U.S. income tax submission for the year. Since only 1000 copies of these volumes were originally printed, I assume a fair selling price should be quite high, but I have no idea how high. If I donate the set, I would need a reasonable appraisal of the value. In either case, I ask anyone interested in either buying or representing a non-profit to contact me (Wayne Olsen) at oceanguyolsen@xxxxxxxxxxx. All volumes are in excellent condition. As a confirmed volcano enthusiast since childhood in the 1950’s, I have numerous other volcano-related publications that I would like to sell individually. This Special Issue invites contributions on multidisciplinary aspects of natural disasters that strike urban areas. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, flooding and climate- forcing extreme events are among the most common natural disasters that can strike urban areas. We are particularly looking for contributions that compare disasters occurring in urban regions to those that are associated with rural areas. In addition to descriptive contributions, this Special Issue invites works on how natural disasters impact economic, logistical or supply chain operations in urban regions. We would also like to include case studies on recent natural disasters that have hit urban regions and the responses of the local authorities (governments and NGOs). This Special Issue is also open to contributions that deal with disaster prevention or long- term geoeducational aspects to communicate and mitigate natural disaster risks for urban populations. Manuscripts of particularly-interesting perspectives, such as geoheritage, geoconservation and geoeducation relating to sustainable urban development would also be relevant to this Special Issue. The successful candidate will join Jan Lindsay, Mary Anne Thompson and Michael Martin from UoA and Graham Leonard from GNS Science to *explore a fit-for-purpose volcanic hazard mapping framework for New Zealand.* The aim of this project is to combine research and scholarship on map design and cartography with lessons from both New Zealand and international volcanic hazard mapping experiences to develop, test and implement an operational framework for volcanic hazard map development in New Zealand to improve hazard communication before, during and after a crisis. The candidate will assist our current efforts to develop a preliminary multi-agency framework for volcanic hazard map development and then apply the framework to a case study volcano in New Zealand. The preliminary framework will be evaluated through qualitative methods (e.g., interviews or focus groups with key stakeholders), and the case study results will be tested (for example, through a table-top exercise or empirical research study), to determine whether the resultant map and associated products are fit for purpose and meet their communication and messaging goals. The research will feed into the development of an *operational framework for volcanic hazard map development in New Zealand, *a flexible workflow that can be implemented across all New Zealand volcanoes for all types of hazard maps. The project will be fully integrated with hazard mapping research and hazard map development at GNS Science. GNS Science runs the GeoNet monitoring programme, which includes volcano monitoring, setting of volcanic alert levels and delivery of alert bulletins that often include maps during eruptions. The area of hazard communication is rapidly gaining attention as an important and priority area of future research worldwide. The successful candidate will join our New Zealand based team to work on the project described above as well as other transdisciplinary research projects in the growing field of hazard and risk communication. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Geography, GIS, or related field (e.g. Volcanology), and a track record of research as demonstrated by scholarly publications. They will have experience in qualitative and quantitative social science research methods; experience in cartography and/or communications research and an openness to engage with stakeholders. An understanding of volcanic processes and hazards will be very beneficial. For more information, including how to apply, please contact Jan Lindsay ( *j.lindsay@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx* <j.lindsay@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>) ============================================================== Volcano Listserv is a collaborative venture among Arizona State University (ASU), Portland State University (PSU), the Global Volcanism Program (GVP) of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI).
