Subject: AGU Session V039 - The Time is Ripe: Advancements of Diffusion Chronometry in Igneous and Metamorphic Systems
Dear Colleagues,
Please consider submitting an abstract to the following session at the 2018 AGU Fall Meeting (10-14 December 2018; Washington D.C.)
*Regular Deadline: 1 August 2018, 11:59 P.M. EDT*
Session V039. The Time is Ripe: Advancements of Diffusion Chronometry in Igneous and Metamorphic Systems
Session Description:
Modeling the time-dependent flux of elements and their isotopes in response to chemical potential gradients can be used to constrain the timescales of geologic processes on Earth and other planetary bodies. Innovative experimental work to determine chemical diffusivities and advancements in modeling techniques have greatly expanded the utility and accuracy of chronometry methods. Diffusion “clocks” can be used to study timescales of processes as varied as magma storage, magma ascent, batholith assembly, hydrothermal alteration, and subduction. We seek contributions that use diffusion chronometry to explore the timescales of petrologic processes via measurements of chemical gradients in minerals and melt, and experimental or numerical simulations of diffusive re-equilibration. We particularly encourage contributions that utilize multiple diffusing species or diffusion in multiple phases to capture system histories that span timescales of seconds to millennia.
Invited presentations by: Anne Peslier (NASA Johnson Space Center) and Michael Jollands (Université de Lausanne)
Conveners: Kendra J. Lynn and Megan Newcombe
For the first time, the AGU Fall Meeting will be held in Washington, D.C., where we will mark the launch AGU’s Centennial. A wide variety of events are being planned that will take advantage of this special location that will showcase our science to the U.S. and international policy community, students, and public); leverage the local scientific community, including events with the Smithsonian, National Academies, and others; and, offer field trips to view the local geology and research institutes. The Fall Meeting will also offer more workshops as well as new Tutorial sessions to help students and researchers learn about new approaches and techniques and introduce exciting science in other disciplines.
Additional information, including everything you need to know about abstract submission is here: https://fallmeeting.agu.
Feel free to contact us with any questions, and we look forward to seeing
you in D.C.!
Best Regards,
Kendra J. Lynn (University of Delaware)
Megan Newcombe (Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory)
