Volcanic Analogues PhD Scholarship, Earth Observatory of Singapore, Asian School of the Environment, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

A fully funded PhD Research Scholarship (tuition plus stipend) is available at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore starting January 2019. The research project will focus on defining volcano and eruption analogues for improved hazard assessment. Statistical approaches will be used to interrogate large datasets of eruption records and other volcanological information (e.g. monitoring data), in order to test how we best identify an ‘analogue’, and quantify the uncertainties associated with doing so. The student is expected to be quantitative, hold an earth sciences or project-relevant background, and have interests in statistics, numerical modelling and volcanic hazard assessment.

The scholarship is available to students of all nationalities, and the submission deadline is late July 2018, although shortlisting will take place prior to that. If you are interested, please contact the main supervisor Dr Susanna Jenkins (susanna.jenkins@xxxxxxxxxx) with a CV and a covering letter of your research experience, interests and reasons for wanting to do a PhD by 16 July 2018. Students should have completed an MSc degree prior to commencing study, and, ideally, have a track record of disseminating their research through meetings, conferences and/or peer-reviewed publication/s.

Full details regarding the funded scholarship are available from:

The successful candidate will join the Volcano Group of the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at NTU. NTU is a young and research-intensive university, ranked 11th globally and 1st amongst the world’s best young universities.
