Permanent research-track electron-probe SEM position with the USGS
The USGS is seeking a geoscientist to oversee the electron-microprobe and scanning electron microscope (SEM) laboratories at our Menlo Park, California campus. The position entails conducting original research leading to scientific publications in the fields of volcanic and igneous petrology, collaborating with and assisting instrument users in fields encompassing mineral resources, rock deformation, climate and land use, and marine studies, overseeing routine instrument maintenance and scheduling periodic servicing and repairs by contract technicians, and managing laboratory accounts and instrument use. Optimal applicants will have high expertise with electron-microprobe and SEM methods demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications. This is a permanent research-track position starting at the GS13 grade. Research-track employees are eligible for promotion mainly based on publication productivity and impact and have a full performance level of GS15. The USGS Menlo Park campus is home to the Volcano Science Center’s California Volcano Observatory (CalVO), the Earthquake Science Center, the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center (GMEG), the Western Geographic Science Center, and portions of the Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center and of the Water Mission Area.
