COV10: Eruption Forecasts and Warnings at Long-Quiescent Volcanoes.
Session S2.10 and Workshop W10

We are pleased to invite you to a linked session and workshop on the design and delivery of warnings at volcanoes reawakening after several generations of repose.

Session S2.10 ( www.citiesonvolcanoes10.com/s2-10/) will evaluate how well current warning strategies satisfy the expectations of vulnerable communities, and identify flexible methodologies that can accommodate local social circumstances. Questions to be addressed include: Is the information provided perceived as necessary? Can warnings confuse rather than clarify how to respond in an emergency? Are warnings disregarded if issued too far ahead of time? Case studies that highlight both failures and successes in warning strategies will be especially welcome. The deadline for submitting abstracts is 10 May 2018.

In the post-conference Workshop W10 ( www.citiesonvolcanoes10.com/w-10/) an interdisciplinary team with expertise in physical and social science will build on the themes discussed in Session S2.10 and debate practical methods for improved warnings of eruptions to communities without previous experience of a volcanic emergency. From veterans to early-career researchers, whether scientists or non-scientists, all are welcome for a day of lively and thought-provoking discussion.

The one-day workshop will be held on 8 September 2018. Attendance is free but you must register by 15 June.

Convenors: Gala Avvisati, Gabriella Gribaudi, Karen Holmberg, Christopher Kilburn, Sabina Michnowicz & Anna Maria Zaccaria.
