Dear colleagues,
Please consider the following job opportunity open at the Icelandic Meteorological Office:
------------------------------
Expert in satellite remote sensing of volcanic emissions
------------------------------
The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) is advertising a three-year position for a satellite remote sensing expert to develop methods for quantitative retrieval of volcanic emissions, ash and gas, for use in an operational setting, i.e. during volcanic unrest. As well as satellite data, operational products developed for use during a volcanic crisis episode are expected to integrate multi-parameter data sets (e.g., radar, infrasound, web-cameras, Lidar). The final aim is to build an operational infrastructure that can assess quantitative parameters of a volcanic cloud to constrain initial source parameters for modelling dispersal forecasts.
The role of IMO in monitoring, information dissemination and research of volcanic eruption processes has been greatly expanded in recent years. A major investment has been carried out in infrastructure related to monitoring volcanoes, their eruptions and their effect on the atmosphere. Today a dedicated group of specialists works IMO working on these topics.
Qualifications and requirements
• A doctorate in geoscience, physics or comparable education
• Experience in analysis of remote sensing data, research and/or development of products based on satellite data. Experience with working in an operational environment is an advantage
• Good interpersonal and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to communicate team results
• Initiative and professional competence
• Solid background in computers and programming ability (e.g., Linux/Unix, python, ENVI/IDL,
MatLab, c/c++, Fortran or Java)
• Good knowledge of Icelandic and/or English
• Experience in project management is an advantage
Applications and accompanying documents should preferably be submitted in electronic form by e-mail to borgar@xxxxxxxx. Based in Reykjavik, the Icelandic Meteorological Office is a governmental institute, belonging to the Ministry for the Environment and Natural Resources. The institute is a multidisciplinary monitoring and research institute focused on Earth system processes, i.e. atmosphere, solid earth, hydro-/cryosphere, and oceans, with special emphasis on natural hazards in Iceland. About 140 specialists work at IMO with various educational backgrounds and skills covering many disciplines.
