Dear tephrochronologists and others with interests in tephras and their application

I am very pleased to attach the first circular for the INTAV meeting "Crossing New Frontiers - Tephra Hunt in Transylvania", which is to be held in Romania from 24-29 June in 2018. This international field conference and workshop is the first specialist tephra meeting since the notable Kirishima meeting in Japan in 2010, and it promises to be a stimulating and memorable event. The conference is to be held in an idyllic Transylvanian rural mountainous karstic landscape, near the city of Brasov, dotted with medieval castles (including Dracula’s castle), and with views of the Carpathian Mountains.

A number of excellent key note speakers has been confirmed, and the conference will include both a 1-day mid-conference field trip and a 3-day post-conference field trip, as well as three days of papers, keynote talks, and workshop events. Many details are available in the attached 1st circular. Students and ECRS are especially welcome. Please feel free to pass this note and the 1st circular on to colleagues and students (and local/regional groups of Quaternarists as well as tephrochronologists, volcanologists, archaeologists etc) interested and keen to participate in the conference.

The year 2018 is a special year for tephra studies because it marks the 50th anniversary of the first paper (by Smith and Westgate 1968) to demonstrate the application of the electron microprobe as a tool for analysing glass shards to enable tephras to be 'fingerprinted' and correlated. It also marks the 50th anniversary of the acceptance of the (then) revolutionary theory of 'plate tectonics' in geosciences.

Any queries about "Crossing New Frontiers" can be directed to the convenor (Dr Daniel Veres) or others as indicated in the first circular. A second circular is planned for mid-January 2018 when registrations are scheduled to open.

Please prepare to join us for the conference "Crossing New Frontiers - Tephra Hunt in Transylvania", Romania, 2018. All will be most welcome.

Kindest regards,

David Lowe
On behalf of the LOC and INTAV Exec
