Applications are invited for a NASA-funded PhD studentship in the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences (GMES) at Michigan Technological University. The student will be trained to use a suite of NASA satellite observations to detect and quantify volcanic emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and other trace gases, to advance understanding of volcanic processes and the atmospheric, environmental and health impacts of volcanic degassing. A major focus of the project will be to update and extend recently developed ‘top-down’ volcanic SO2 emissions inventories (e.g., https://www.nature.com/articles/srep44095 ) using new satellite observations, and conduct scientific analysis and validation of the emissions data.
The project will involve close collaboration with scientists at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, USA. Up to three years of PhD student support is available; PhD students are encouraged to apply for other fellowships and small grants to supplement their funding.
We are interested in candidates with strong backgrounds in either geosciences or atmospheric sciences. Students already holding a MS degree are preferred. Prior experience with computer programming (e.g., IDL, Matlab, Python) and satellite data processing are highly advantageous. Michigan Tech is located in Houghton, MI, USA on the southern shore of Lake Superior, the largest and most pristine of the Great Lakes.
