Dear Colleagues,
The IAVCEI Early Career Researchers Network (ECR-Net) is pleased to announced the recipients of student presentation awards for the IAVCEI 2017 Scientific Assembly. Out of more than 400 student presentations, nine were chosen for special recognition.
Three Exceptional Student Presentations, with prizes sponsored by Springer, are:
Brett Walker (University of Hawaii, Manoa) – Petrologic insights into rift-zone magmatic interactions under Kilauea’s Napau Crater (1963-2011)
Euan Mutch (Cambridge University) – Timing magma migration through the Icelandic Crust: from the Moho to the surface
Adonara Mucek (Oregon State University) – Post-74 ka supereruption magma dynamics at Toba Caldera, Indonesia: Constraints from phase equilibria, 40Ar/39Ar and (U-Th)/He age determination
In addition, six Outstanding Student Presentations, sponsored by Nature Geoscience, are being recognized:
Inga Tarasenko (Université Catholique de Louvain) – Crusting of volcanic tephra deposits: an experimental study
Daniel Rasmussen (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) – Multidisciplinary insight into petrologic indicators of eruption run-up
Danielle McLean (Oxford University) – Resolving the tempo of Holocene volcanism in East Asia using the Lake Suigetsu record (central Japan)
Ben Heath (University of Oregon) – Upper crustal structure of Santorini Volcano and the surrounding region from dense, active-source seismic data
Alexandri Iezzi (University of Alaska, Fairbanks) – 3-D acoustic waveform simulation and inversion at Yasur Volcano, Vanuatu
Gueugneau Valentin (Université Blaise Pascal) – Numerical modelling of the surge-derived pyroclastic flow of 25 June 1997 at Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat
ECR-Net would like to thank the nearly 200 volunteer judges that provided feedback to student attendees. Special thanks go to those scientists who judged 10 or more student presentations: Ben Andrews, Abigail Barker, Steffi Burchardt, Roger Denlinger, Aurelie Germa, Christopher Harpel, Janine Kavanagh, Ben Kennedy, James Muirhead, David Neave, Matt Patrick, Margherita Polacci, Erika Rader, Diana Roman, Loÿc Vanderkluysen, Mattia De' Michieli Vitturi, Christelle Wauthier, John Wolff, and Georg Zellmer.
In addition, ECR-Net is grateful to Hannah Dietterich, who coordinated all aspects of the student presentation awards. We are indebted for her dedication and commitment.
