Dear Colleague,

We invite you to submit an abstract to a special session

“V017: Large Igneous Provinces from the Mantle to the Atmosphere: Causes and Consequences of Flood Volcanism”

at the AGU Fall Meeting in New Orleans, December 11-15, 2017.

Session ID#: 26190 https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm17/preliminaryview.cgi/Session24199

Abstract Submission Deadline:  2 August 2017

Session description:

Rapid outpourings of enormous volumes of magma that form volcanic oceanic plateaus and continental flood basalts in Large Igneous Provinces (or LIPs) have been important in Earth's evolution — not only because of their likely role in the most recent four mass extinctions, but also in terms of crustal evolution and as windows on deep mantle dynamics and geochemistry. This multi-disciplinary session will highlight work elucidating the mantle melting processes, petrological/geochemical evolution of magmas, timing and nature of flood volcanism, and effects on the atmosphere and biosphere associated with the emplacement of LIPs. Contributions are encouraged from all related fields, including: geodynamic modeling; seismic imaging; experimental, observational, and theoretical petrology; geochronology; geochemistry (including ocean chemistry); eruption and lava flow dynamics; and the effects of volcanic outgassing on atmospheric chemistry, climate, and biological processes. Approaches addressing which variables concerning LIPs cause the largest effects on the biosphere are particularly welcome.

Sincerely,

Your conveners:

Mark A Richards (University of California Berkeley)

Paul R. Renne (Berkeley Geochronology Center)

Sally A Gibson (University of Cambridge)

Benjamin A Black (City College of New York)
