PhD Position in Petrology: Nature and timescales of magmatic processes under Kīlauea Volcano (Hawai‘i) revealed by the olivine cargo

A PhD position is now open at the Geology and Geophysics (GG) department for an outstanding student to work on a research project focusing on the olivine crystal cargo in Hawaiian basalt. Olivine will be use to understand the temporal evolution of the plumbing system under Kīlauea Volcano. The project combines field work at Kīlauea, petrological, geochemical modeling, and potentially experimental work.

Project Description: Products from several eruptions from the past 100 years will be examined, and the chemical zoning characteristics of olivine will be utilized to extract timescale information via diffusion modeling. These timescales will be placed within the context of the exceptional geophysical (deformation and seismic) data available for a number of these eruptions. The student will also have the possibility to perform and use laboratory experiments of olivine crystallization in basalt.

Qualifications: The candidate should already have a Master’s degree and research experience in igneous petrology. Excellent work ethics and motivation are a must! Good physics and math skills as well as experience with scientific programming are desired.

Responsibilities: The student will be expected to fulfill her/his research duties within the vibrant GG dept. at the University of Hawaii, and will likely be involved in mentoring undergraduate students. It is possible that the student will perform one semester of Teaching Assistant (TA) duties.

Collaborating Personnel: The candidate will be advised by myself (Tom Shea) and work in close collaboration with Pr. Mike Garcia also at GG. The student will also have the unique opportunity to collaborate with scientists from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (USGS).

Project duration: 3 years (dependent on funding)

Expected starting date: January 2018 (Spring semester)

Application: The application material should include: a cover letter, a CV, and the contact information of three referees. Send the material directly to tshea@xxxxxxxxxx. The review process will start on July 1st and continue until a suitable candidate is found. Inquiries about the position should be sent to the same email address.
