Emplacement processes for volcaniclastic sediments can be extremely difficult to interpret.

A four-day field trip (August 10–13) to Mount St. Helens (Washington) and Mount Hood (Oregon)—pre-meeting excursion A6 with the 2017 IAVCEI Scientific Assembly in Portland, Oregon—will concentrate on identifying the key criteria for making these interpretations.  Although we will cover the eruptive histories of these two volcanoes, the main focus will be on examining, comparing, photographing, and discussing the important characteristics of world-class outcrops of depositional units emplaced by pyroclastic density currents, lahars of different concentrations, debris avalanches, volcanic water floods, and volcano glaciers.  If you work with volcaniclastic deposits, you won’t want to miss this trip.

Registration for field trip is separate from meeting registration, and the firm deadline for signing up is June 1.  Meeting registration is not required for field-trip participation.  Please register online now and join us August 10–13 to see an exceptionally large variety of fresh and well-exposed volcaniclastic deposits.  Trip leaders are Tom Pierson, Lee Siebert, Chris Harpel, and Kevin Scott.  Cost is $600 and includes coach transportation, accommodation for three nights and some meals.
