Scope of the Special Issue

We would like to describe the state-of-the-art on structure and magmatic processes of mid-oceanic ridges as inferred along Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. The special issue aims at gathering contributions about available observations and modelling including geology, physics and chemistry of rocks and fluids of mid-oceanic ridges, with a strong focus on Reykjanes, Iceland. Two main topics are identified: understanding the structure and magmatic processes at active tectonic plate boundaries and the exploration and exploitation of hydrothermal systems along the ridge.

A lot of work has been carried out at Reykjanes Peninsula; as still un-published, this will form the core of the issue. In addition, within the EU-project IMAGE, a large amount of geophysical data has been acquired, including on and off shore seismic data and electromagnetic data, and will strengthen the special issue in both ridge (structure and magmatic processes) and geothermal exploration. Comparison with other mid-oceanic ridges (former ones in Iceland and active ones elsewhere on Earth, e.g., Afar) shall be included, depending on the number of manuscripts. Supercritical fluid conditions, hydrothermal activity and their potential and current geothermal exploitation, is in focus. Structural geology and earthquakes analysis in the past are more than welcome.

The recent ICDP (Iceland Deep Drilling Program 2) finished drilling in Reykjanes gave a large amount of new in situ data. This provides good verification of the surface data and shallow drilling observations. We invite contributions on observations and results as well from the wells analysis.

Submission deadline: 30th June 2017
