Sequences of tephra falls dating to 15,000 years; deposits of lahars that were tens of meters deep and formed after a large lake breached its volcaniclastic blockage; deposits of a pyroclastic density current debated to be a flow or a surge; the deposit of a huge debris avalanche; evidence of interactions among a large lake, a debris avalanche, and an energetic pyroclastic density current; and ongoing societal impacts to an eruption that happened nearly four decades ago. These are just some of the geological wonders, scientific conundrums, and societal issues we will examine and address during a 5-day field trip that circumnavigates Mount St. Helens, a trip that precedes the IAVCEI 2017 Scientific Assembly. See the evidence upon which scientists conclude that Mount St. Helens is the most active volcano in the Cascades Range. Learn how this volcanic center evolved from a cluster of lava domes to a majestic stratovolcano. Learn how its 1980 eruption compares to its past eruptive history (it may not be what you think). And learn how the volcano is rebuilding after its cataclysmic 1980 eruption.

The trip, Recent and Ancient Volcaniclastic Processes and Deposits at Mount St. Helens, begins on Monday, August 7 and returns to Portland, Oregon, on Saturday August 12, allowing participants time to orient and acclimate before the Scientific Assembly begins on August 14. Trip cost ($900) includes transportation from Portland; double occupancy lodging; breakfast, lunch, snacks and a couple of dinners; entrance to the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, and a printed field trip guide. To register for the trip, please go to http://iavcei2017.org/registration.html.

Field trip registration closes June 1.  If you have any questions about this trip, please contact one of the trip leaders.
