PhD project on fluid dynamic modelling of discrete submarine eruptive explosions:

Submarine volcanic eruptions involve very rapid expulsion of magma, particles, gas and liquid, which interact with one another and with the surrounding water column at temperatures ranging from magmatic to ambient. We seek a PhD student to undertake a computational fluid-dynamic (CFD) analysis of submarine explosive eruptions focused particularly on discrete explosions of the sort that were observed subaerially with the volcanic eruption that breached the sea surface in 1963 as the new island of Surtsey was born. This is one of a group of research projects focused on volcanic eruptions in water or beneath ice, and there are likely to be opportunities to take part in analogue experimental studies of submarine volcanic explosions, and to participate in some geological fieldwork on products of submarine eruptions.

The project will develop and utilize skills in computational modelling, thermodynamics, and volcanic processes. Techniques developed and employed during this study will have applications across volcanology, and also for other geofluids and engineering applications.

We seek applications from high-performing Masters and BSc(honours) students able to compete successfully for a University of Otago doctoral scholarship (http://www.otago.ac.nz/study/scholarships/database/otago014687.html). Supervision will be provided in the Centre for Materials Science and Technology (Sarah Wakes) and Department of Geology (James DL White).
