Dear colleagues,

We invite you to register to a pre-meeting workshop in association with IAVCEI 2017, titled Using Small Unmanned Systems in Volcanology

Date:
Sunday, August 13 (pre-conference), from 9 to 5.

Workshop description:
The use of small, unmanned aerial systems (UASs) is quickly gaining popularity in volcanology. This workshop, designed for current and prospective UAS users, will build on this excitement and cover topics including:

• Image acquisition platforms

• Before and during data collection: regulations, certification and permitting, campaign optimization, ground control and image network design, remote field logistics

• After the field campaign: Data processing (including a hands-on processing exercise)

• Moving beyond the visible image: using UASs for physical sample collection, thermal/multi/hyper spectral imaging, plume/ash/gas sampling

Requirements of participants:
Participants should bring a laptop and charger, with a pre-installed demo version of PhotoScan Pro, by Agisoft. The software can be downloaded at: http://www.agisoft.com/downloads/request-trial/

Note: The trial license is valid for 30 days. Participants should install the software close to the workshop date, to avoid license expiration.

Participant application process:
The workshop is capped at 25 participants. Priority will be given to early career scientists and graduate students. In the registration form, please indicate any past experience with photogrammetry, remote sensing, and aerial or submarine data acquisition, as well as intended applications and use of the skills and knowledge gained at the workshop.

Workshop cost:
$85 (includes refreshments and a USB drive with electronic workshop materials)

Hoping to see you in Portland,

Einat Lev, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
Christopher Hamilton, University of Arizona
Mike James, Lancaster University
