POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, Probabilistic modelling of volcanic hazards
RIFTVOLC project
2 year fixed term appointment

The British Geological Survey (BGS), founded in 1835 is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), and is the world's longest-established national geological survey. A vacancy has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Post-Doctoral Research Associate working with our Volcanology team at the BGS office in Edinburgh.

The project is part of a NERC-funded large grant on Rift Volcanism (RiftVolc) in Ethiopia and involves collaboration between the Volcanology Team at BGS and Dr Eliza Calder at the University of Edinburgh.

The post will involve undertaking probabilistic volcanic hazard assessment, for pyroclastic density currents as well as potentially other processes, at Aluto and/or Corbetti volcanoes in the Main Ethiopian Rift.  You will use a combination of computer modelling and Bayesian statistical approaches to undertake probabilistic modelling of pyroclastic density currents at the case study volcanoes, as well as employ recently developed statistical emulator methodologies for quantitative volcanic hazard assessment and uncertainty analysis.

You must have a PhD in computational modelling together with an understanding of statistical modelling of volcanic processes, probabilistic hazard assessment and uncertainty quantification. You will be expected to publish research results in a timely manner, as well as communicate your science effectively to both expert and non-specialist audiences, including stakeholders in government agencies, non-governmental organisations and industry, through publications and presentations.  Previous experience with application of statistical emulators is highly desirable.

This is a 2 year fixed term appointment.  Depending on qualifications and experience, full time starting salary will be from £28,200 per annum to £30,600 per annum.  Full time working hours are 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.  A generous benefits package is also offered, including a company pension scheme, childcare voucher scheme, 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays.

This is advertised as a full time post but we will consider applications from those who require more flexible arrangements.

Applications are handled by the RCUK Shared Services Centre; to apply please visit our job board at http://www.topcareer.jobs/ and submit your up-to-date C.V. and covering letter, which clearly outlines why you are applying for this post and how you meet the criteria described in this advertisement. Applicants who would like to receive this advert in an alternative format (e.g. large print, Braille, audio or hard copy), or who are unable to apply online should contact us by telephone on 01793 867003, Please quote reference number IRC240237. If you would like further information regarding the post, please contact Dr Eliza Calder at Edinburgh University – email: eliza.calder@xxxxxxxx

Closing date for receipt of application forms is 30 March 2017. We would like the post holder to start as soon as possible and must be in place before 1st September 2017.

The Natural Environment Research Council is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.  People with disabilities and those from ethnic minorities are currently under-represented and their applications are particularly welcome.  The British Geological Survey is an Investors in People organization and has Athena SWAN bronze award.  There is a guaranteed Interview Scheme for suitable candidates with disabilities.
