SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES WITH MOUNT ST. HELENS INSTITUTE

Founded in 1996 by a handful of individuals passionate about Mount St. Helens, the Mount St. Helens Institute is a 501(c) (3) private, nonprofit organization devoted to helping people understand and protect the volcano.  Mount St. Helens Institute’s mission is to advance understanding and stewardship of the earth through science, education and exploration of volcanic landscapes.
  • Term: April 17-October 31

    Science Educators support our hands-on science education programs including day and overnight programs for youth ages 6-18. Under the direction of the Mount St. Helens Institute’s Science Education Director and with the support of the Science Education Coordinator, the Science Educators will work with the entire education team to develop activities, lead hikes, implement learning activities both indoors and outdoors, host groups, and maintain our vibrant and growing education programs. Education programs include summer camps, school field trips, youth group trips, classroom programs, and outreach events. Most education programs occur at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center but some programs will occur at other sites around the volcano. This exciting position has the opportunity to support and develop an amazing educational resource at Mount St. Helens.

    Term of employment has some flexibility. This is a full-time temporary position that requires weekend and overnight work. Two positions are available.

  • Term: May 29, 2017 to early-September (dates flexible)

    Do you love volcanoes? Do you want to improve your public speaking and communication skills? Are you hoping to go into the field of education? Have you ever dreamed of being a park ranger? The Mount St. Helens Institute (MSHI) and US Forest Service (USFS) are seeking ONE motivated Education and Interpretation Intern who will work approximately 50% of the season with the Mount St. Helens Institute’s Volcano Outdoor School and Volcano Camp youth science programs and 50% of the time with USFS at the busy Johnston Ridge Observatory visitor center conducting Junior Ranger programs for youth K-8. Intern will work approximately 40 hours/week. Intern will be provided with practical job training in informal science education and interpretation. Intern will be expected to work on weekends.

    Mount St. Helens Institute and USFS staff will work with Intern to meet his or her educational and professional goals and craft a valuable individual learning experience.

  • Term: May 29, 2017 to early-September (dates flexible)

It is the responsibility of the Intern to complete paperwork with his or her university necessary to receive credit for the experience; Mount St. Helens Institute and USFS staff will work with Intern to meet his or her educational and professional goals and craft a valuable individual learning experience.
