Visiting Assistant Professor Geology Position:  COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON



The College of Charleston Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences (http://geology.cofc.edu) is accepting applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in Geology. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Geosciences with research and teaching interests in geology. The department is seeking a field-oriented geoscientist who is able to teach introductory geology courses (including Earth History), and one or more of the following core courses: Structural Geology, Mineralogy/Petrology, Sedimentary Geology. We seek an individual who can strengthen our core research activities while diversifying the research opportunities offered to our students. Areas of interest include (but not restricted to): petroleum geology, forensic geology, applied geophysics, quaternary geology (climate orientated), mineralogy, mining geology, and engineering geology. The teaching load for faculty with an active research program is nine (9) contact hours per semester and the successful visiting faculty member will be encouraged to remain active in his/her research area. They will have opportunities to advise or co-advise student research. This is a one-academic-year (Aug. 15, 2017 - May 15, 2018) position, and the successful candidate will be allowed to apply for the tenure-track Assistant Professor position should it be advertised. A Ph.D. is required by August 15, 2017.

 

The Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences has over 120 undergraduate majors and offers many topical and interdisciplinary elective courses in the geosciences. The Department also provides some of the core and elective courses in the multidisciplinary Graduate Program in Environmental Studies and the M.Ed. in Science and Mathematics. Collaborations are available with well-established faculty research programs including: geochemistry, coastal processes, environmental geology, geospatial sciences, hydrology, marine geology, natural hazards, seismology, and tectonics. There is also a vibrant group of collaborative opportunities with organizations in the Charleston-region.
