PhD position in crustal geophysics

The Earth Science Institute at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) invites applications for a Ph.D. position on (intra-)crustal geophysical investigations starting Spring 2017.

In frame of project OROG3NY (http://wp.unil.ch/orog3ny/) the Ph.D. research will employ two main geophysical tools, seismology and gravimetry, to investigate the structure within the continental crust, and to link geophysical and geological knowledge and understanding. For both methods it is foreseen that the Ph.D. candidate collects new field data. There are various targets to be investigated in the Alps and there is the possibility to add other ones according to the candidate’s motivation and well-supported proposal. Cooperation with experts in geophysics, geology and petrology, nationally and internationally, is planned.

Applicants should have a M.Sc. degree in natural sciences. Experience in seismology and gravimetry are an advantage. Good knowledge of several of the following languages is essential: English, MatLab, Italian, Fortran, French, German. The successful applicant will possess strong written and oral communication skills, be expected to present results at national and international conferences and to publish in peer-reviewed international journals. Experience and motivation in doing fieldwork (incl. driving) are an advantage.

The University of Lausanne hosts several experts covering a large domain of Earth Sciences, and offers excellent research conditions. The campus and the city are located on the shore of the largest lake in Western Europe, the region provides comfortable living. The knowledge of French is not a requirement for work but may be an advantage for everyday life.

Applications [CV with aforementioned language skill details; a max. 1-page motivation letter with own ideas; copy of M.Sc. diploma; contact details of at least two references] are to be sent via e-mail only in a single PDF file to Prof. György Hetényi (gyorgy.hetenyi@xxxxxxx). Seeking to promote an equitable representation of men and women among its staff, the University encourages applications from women.

The evaluation of applications will start January 16th 2017 and will continue until the position is filled. We regret that only successful applicants will be informed.
