A PhD position funded by DFG has opened up in the "Magma propagation research group”, PI Eleonora Rivalta, at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. GFZ is located in Potsdam, ~20 min. distant by train from the German capital, Berlin.


The research will focus on external stress controls (tectonics and surface loads) on magma chamber formation. Funding is available for 3 years.


Tasks:

Model the stress field at volcanoes in different tectonic settings
Model numerically ascending magma-filled dikes
Contribute to our magma propagation software
Carry out analog experiments in the laboratory
Conceive comprehensive models including evidence from geophysics, geology and geochemistry
Publish in international journals and present results at scientific meetings
Participate actively to activities in our group, Section and Department.


Qualifications:

MSc (or equivalent) 4-year degree in Geophysics, Physics or Geoscience
Good mathematical/physical skills
Good programming skills (e.g. matlab, python, unix/Linux, shell scripting)
You work well in teams
Good communication skills
