Subject: 3-year Postdoctoral Research Position in Volcano Infrasound available at the University of Liverpool, UK
**************************************************************************************
A 3-year Post Doctoral Research Associate position in Volcano Infrasound is available at the University of Liverpool to work within the framework of the NERC-funded project: "Assessing the strength of volcanic eruptions using acoustic infrasound measurements”. The PDRA will work on modelling and inversion of volcanic infrasound waveforms to assess the strength and mechanisms of volcano acoustic sources. The results of infrasound modelling will be used to test, non-stationary, model of volcanic ash plume rise. The PDRA will join a large multi-national team at the University of Liverpool with broad expertise in volcano geophysics, field and experimental volcanology. The PDRA will spend a period of up to 6 months with project partners at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, USA. Additional visits to other national and international collaborators are possible. The PDRA will also take the lead on testing geophysical equipment and planning field campaigns. Anticipated field locations include Mt. Etna, Italy, and the Santiaguito lava dome complex, Guatemala, although other locations are possible/anticipated.
The PDRA will lead the computational, modelling and inversion aspects of the project in collaboration with the Geophysics research group at Liverpool and project partners at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Ash plume modelling will be conducted in collaboration with partners at the School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol, UK.
A PhD in Geophysics or related discipline with experience in handling volcano geophysical data - in particular acoustic infrasound and seismic - and familiarity with fieldwork on active volcanoes is required. Familiarity with numerical modelling and/or inversion of volcano seismic and acoustic data, is desirable.
The post is available from 1 December 2016 until 30 September 2019.
