The USGS Volcano Science Center is hiring a Research Geologist to join the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, WA. This is a permanent position with full benefits to be filled at the GS 13 level.
We welcome applicants with strong research backgrounds in physical volcanology, volcano stratigraphy, and Quaternary volcano geology, with significant fieldwork experience on volcanoes, and with substantial experience in the use of laboratory and modeling techniques to improve understanding of physical processes underlying explosive volcanism and tephra dispersal. Please note that applicants must be U.S. citizens.
The application period is currently open and will close on Thursday, November 17, 2016, at midnight Eastern Standard Time.
Some of the duties of this position will include:
· Serving as a principal investigator of volcanic eruptive processes and history, specializing in explosive volcanism, and applying research results to inform volcano hazards assessments and the interpretation and forecasting of volcanic eruptions.
· Investigating processes associated with explosive volcanism, including ash dispersal, ash-cloud mechanics, and pyroclastic flow generation.
· Mapping volcanic deposits, applying stratigraphic principles, conducting laboratory analyses, and utilizing Quaternary dating techniques in research investigations.
· Developing new field and laboratory techniques for use in understanding explosive eruptions and tephra dispersal. Techniques may include physical modeling of eruptive processes, stratigraphic analysis, geologic mapping, analysis of historical unrest, field and laboratory investigations of volcanic deposits, and interpretation of such deposits to determine eruption dynamics.
· Disseminating results of research by publishing as a primary author in peer-reviewed scientific journals, presenting results at national and international meetings, and leading sessions at professional meetings.
· Performing fieldwork on and near volcanoes. Such fieldwork may involve hiking long distances (over 10 miles) in areas with minimal or no established trails, camping for multiple nights in remote locations, and carrying heavy loads for extended distances. Fieldwork on Cascade volcanoes may at times involve exposure to extreme weather conditions ranging from arctic to tropical, and occasionally also working out of helicopters.
· Assisting in volcano monitoring activities at CVO or as needed at other US volcano observatories.
