The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Manchester, UK, offers a number of PhD projects for 2017 entry under the Manchester & Liverpool Doctoral Training Programme scheme funded by NERC (http://www.sees.manchester.ac.uk/our-research/phdprojectsfor2017/research-topics/earth-and-environmental-science-related-projects/).

The deadline for application is January 18th 2017 and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on 22nd and 23rd February 2017.

PhD projects on volcanic processes and volcanic eruption dynamics are listed at the following links:

Unravelling the behaviour of basaltic volcanoes by combining field observations, 4D imaging of HPHT basaltic magma kinetics experiments and analytical investigations

Understanding Basaltic Plinian Eruptions

Crystal Mush Controls on Volcanic Activity

Magmatic versus phreatomagmatic activity during the 1783-1784 Laki eruption, Iceland: implications for vesiculation, permeabillity and degassing in basaltic magmas

The role of viscous heating on the dynamics of explosive volcanic eruptions: the case of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption, Philippines

Our PhD studentships provide funding for tuition fees and stipend. Because they are funded by NERC, they are available to UK nationals and other EU nationals who have resided in the UK for three years prior to commencing the studentship. Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may still be eligible for a fees-only award. Overseas students may be able to join the programme but will need to have arranged funding from other sources.

All the best,

Dr. Margherita Polacci
