Job Description
The Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University wishes to recruit an outstanding Lecturer in Earth Sciences. The Department has broad interests across the range of geosciences (see web link below) and seeks applications from exceptional candidates working in any areas of geoscience research that complement and build on its current expertise and interests.
The position offers an exciting opportunity to conduct research and teaching of the highest, international quality. Academics are expected to raise funding to undertake research, to recruit and supervise postgraduate students and postdoctoral research staff, and to explore the full potential for impact of their research. All academic staff members are encouraged to develop their own research groups and are also expected to contribute to existing research themes in the Department and across the University, including collaborative vehicles such as the Durham Energy Institute and the Institute for Hazard, Risk and Resilience.
The new lecturer will contribute to delivery of the Department’s research-led, undergraduate teaching in the classroom and in the field. This will include teaching large groups, small (e.g. tutorial) groups, supervising dissertation/research projects and acting as an advisor for undergraduates. Staff may be asked to teach outside their immediate expertise at an elementary level.

Key Responsibilities:
Conduct research of the highest quality and present findings in appropriate, international publications.
Obtain funds from appropriate sources to sustain independent research.
Carry out teaching in the Department at both undergraduate, including supervision and tutoring at all levels, and postgraduate levels.
Contribute to the Department’s wider academic goals through collaboration both within
and beyond the University.
Conduct administrative duties allocated by the Head of Department in an effective and proactive manner.

Essential Criteria
All grades:
Professional Attributes:
1. A good first degree and a doctorate in Earth Science (for Grade 7 completed or under examination).
2. A personal research plan which demonstrates how it will support, deliver and enhance the research strategies of the Department and the University.
3. Ability to undertake research which has the potential to shape the disciplinary agenda
and/or create public benefit or impact in terms of individual or societal wellbeing or the economy outside the academic community.
4. Experience of teaching at undergraduate and (depending on experience)
postgraduate levels.
5. Willingness to undertake administrative responsibilities and participate actively as a citizen and ambassador of the Department of Earth Sciences.
Generic Skills:
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
7. A desire and plan to collaborate proactively with academic collaborators both at
Durham and elsewhere.
8. Appropriate technical knowledge to execute the applicant’s research programmes.
9. Ability to use appropriate software to support the applicant’s own research and
teaching.
Grade 7:
10. Evidence of authoring/publishing (depending on experience) original research for leading international, peer reviewed publications.
Grade 8:
11. A track record of publishing original research in leading international, peer reviewed publications.
12. Evidence of having successfully attracted external funding to implement research programmes that show leadership in the candidate’s field, and which have the
potential to create public benefit or impact.
13. A track record of delivering high quality undergraduate teaching.
14. Experience of attracting and successfully supervising doctoral students.
Desirable Criteria (All Grades)
1. A good record of developing and disseminating successful learning approaches.
2. Experience of engaging with external stakeholders, such as funding councils, learned societies, national interest/study groups, in the UK and/or abroad.
3. An interest in outreach and engaging with the community of NE England.
4. Knowledge of the Department’s degree content, including residential field trip locations.
5. A track record of relevant administrative experience.
