Today GVP launched “Eruptions, Earthquakes, and Emissions,” or “E3” – a mobile web application.

Capitalizing on the new data streams available through GVP’s redesigned architecture and webservices,E3 presents a fully interactive timelapse experience of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes since 1960, and volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions since 1978.  This dramatic musical visualization allows the user to manipulate our planet in map or globe view and investigate individual eruptions, earthquakes, and volcanic gas emission events with a click.

The app highlights GVP’s newest dataset: a compendium of SO2 emissions (kilotons/event) derived from NASA satellite observations and provided to GVP by Simon Carn at Michigan Technological University. An E3 user can also track individual SO2 plumes as they encircle the globe and disperse.

The new datastreams are part of a larger partnership with the Deep Carbon Observatory to quantify volcanic emissions, and Smithsonian gratefully acknowledges their support for E3. We also acknowledge NASA for supporting development of the volcanic SO₂ database through the MEaSUREs program. www.volcano.si.edu/E3
