AGU Fall Meeting, 12-16 December 2016.
Abstract submission deadline: Wednesday, 3 August 23:59 EDT
Early Abstract submission deadline: Wednesday, 27 July

Session ID: V014

Session Title: From source to vents – screening basaltic magma plumbing systems

Section/Focus Group: Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology

Conveners: Maren Kahl, Margaret Hartley, John Maclennan, Þorvaldur Þórðarson

In recent years, our ability to detect subsurface magma transport via seismic and ground deformation networks and satellite remote sensing has advanced such that we can resolve magma movement beneath active volcanoes. However, these methods can infer the physical location of magma, but cannot track the physico-chemical processes that change its properties during magma migration. Knowledge of the routes and durations of magma ascent and storage, and how magma chemistry evolves as it migrates towards the surface, is essential for anticipating the style and intensity of future eruptions. In this session we welcome a wide range of multi-disciplinary contributions including those using (i) geospeedometry to access the timescales, durations and rates of magmatic processes; (ii) multi-method geothermobarometry, including fluid and melt inclusion approaches, to track magmatic evolution from source to vent; and (iii) numerical modelling of conduit processes to characterize the transfer, storage and evolution of magmas within and through volcanic systems.
