Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of my co-conveners I invite you to contribute to:

Session V001: Active Volcanic Vents: An Exceptional Opportunity for Science and Education

Improved understanding of volcano behavior and, ultimately, more effective eruption forecasting requires both multi-parametric studies of active volcanoes and a cadre of scientists trained to collect and interpret such data. Active ‘open-vent’ volcanoes provide unique opportunities for geophysical and geochemical observations of dynamic volcanic processes such as lava effusion, degassing and explosive activity. They also represent an exceptional educational resource, where students can be trained in instrument deployment and near real-time data interpretation. For this session we solicit abstracts describing any combination of geophysical (e.g. seismology, infrasound, deformation), remote sensing (e.g. gas spectroscopy, thermal and visible imaging and videography), geological/petrological, and modeling techniques applied to active volcanic vents, in addition to their use in an educational context. We particularly encourage studies that combine diverse techniques to generate a more comprehensive understanding of active vent processes, in addition to presentations that describe effective strategies for instrument deployment and multiparametric data analysis.

Invited presenters:

Jeffrey Johnson, Boise State University

Jacopo Taddeucci, INGV

Conveners:
