The Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP) is a joint program between USGS and the US Agency for International Development that works with partners around the world to reduce the risk from volcanic eruptions (http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vdap/). VDAP is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and you can learn more about this milestone at https://www.usaid.gov/what-we-do/working-crises-and-conflict/volcano-disaster-assistance-program.

This year VDAP is also being honored as a finalist for a Service to America Medal (Sammies). The Sammies medal is known as the “Oscars” of government service and aims to honor exceptional US government workers. One way to wish VDAP a happy 30th anniversary is to vote for VDAP Chief John Pallister and the team for the Sammies People’s Choice award at http://servicetoamericamedals.org/peoples-choice/. It is possible to vote once a day until voting closes on September 9. In addition to the official selection committee votes, the People’s Choice honoree will be announced on September 20… so stay tuned.

This honor would not be possible without the partnerships VDAP has made with amazing scientists around the world. As VDAP reflects on our 30th year, the team would like to thank the many colleagues who have collaborated with us on working towards the shared mission of preventing volcanic crises from becoming disasters.
