A fellowship for Ph.D. study within the crustal deformation research group and the Nordic Volcanological Center at the Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland is open for application. The support is for a Ph.D. study in the field of volcano geodesy, utilizing measurements and models of crustal deformation to improve understanding of eruptions, magma movements and other processes taking place in the roots of volcanoes. The project is supervised by Freysteinn Sigmundsson (http://uni.hi.is/fs).
The
aim of the project is to measure crustal movements and deformation on
volcanoes, both with of interferometric analysis of synthetic aperture
radar images (InSAR) and Global Positioning System (GPS) geodesy.
Together with earthquake patterns and other data on volcanoes,
deformation results will be interpreted in terms of models for magmatic
processes, providing improved understanding e.g. of magma chambers,
dykes, and the interaction between volcanoes and tectonic movements. The
key science question to address, stimulated by recent unrest and
eruptive activity in Iceland, is what governs the interplay between
localized accumulation of magma in chambers/reservoirs, the failure of
magma chambers, magma intrusions as dykes and sills, and eruptions. The
project will be carried out in cooperation with supervisors and
collaborators.
The successful candidate is expected to start no later than 1 February 2017.
Applicants need to have a masters degree in
geophysics or related fields at the start of the scholarship.
Experience of computer analysis and modeling of geophysical data is an
asset.
Application deadline is 5 September, 2016.
