CoV9. Workshop W9 – Volcanic ash and aviation hazards
*****************************************************************************************************
Dear Colleagues,
CoV9: Workshop W9. Volcanic ash and aviation hazards
Leaders: Adele Bear-Crozier, Marianne Guffanti, Francisco Bucchi
We invite all interested delegates to participate in our Cities on Volcanoes 9, “Volcanic ash and aviation hazards” workshop.
When: Evening (following conclusion of sessions) - Thursday 24th, November.
Societal vulnerability to volcanic ash is increasing. Since the introduction of transcontinental air travel, the volcanic ash threat to aviation has become widely recognized: volcanic ash in the upper atmosphere, where jet aircraft fly, can cause jet engine failure, damage to turbine blades, and costly flight diversions and cancellations. The increase in passenger air traffic and the inherent complexity of volcanic eruptions make this relatively new volcanic hazard a significant threat to society. The hazard to aviation is not only confined to air routes. Significant danger and concomitant cost occur from ash fall at airports and on runways in regions vulnerable to volcanic activity. The purpose of this workshop is to:
-
Explain the global system of eruption warning, ash-cloud detection and forecasting, and hazard communication that has been established by ICAO.
-
Hear from volcano observatories, volcanic ash advisory centers, and the aviation sector regarding how hazard communication is working or not working.
-
Publicize resources available to help volcano observatories that take on the responsibility of communicating about ash-producing eruptions (including the use of social media platforms).

We look forward to seeing you at CoV9 in Chile!
