There will be two 1-day workshops on volcanic ash topics directly before this year’s Cities on Volcanoes meeting in Puerto Varas, Chile. We encourage everyone interested to sign up by emailing the organizers listed below.

 

Volcanic ashfall impacts working group – Supporting response planning, data collection and a global database

Date: Saturday 19 November 2016

Topics: (1) Developing a global ashfall impacts database, including schema, hosting and serving a range of end-users, including Global Volcanic Model (GVM) and the Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR); (2) Ashfall collection, aiming for links to commissions focusing on ash modeling and on hazard mapping; (3) Design and support of effective inter-agency ashfall mitigation plans; (4) Protocols for impact collection.

Volcanic ash aggregation: State-of-the-art and future directions

Date: Sunday 20 November 2016 (Note: ends before the Icebreaker at 19:00)

Topics: This 6-hour workshop will be driven by invited short talks on selected topics followed by group discussions with the aim of: (1) Summarizing how to recognize ash aggregation in the field, including effective documentation, sampling, and analysis techniques; and (2) Reviewing our current understanding of aggregation processes and identifying the major gaps in knowledge.

Expected outcomes: (1) A summary document of sampling/analysis strategies, and recommendations for future work to address the key issues, (2) A Wikipedia page on ash aggregation with sub-sections defined and populated by participants.
