Mendenhall Research Opportunity 16-10:  Using paleomagnetism to evaluate the risks from clustered volcanic activity

Volcanoes commonly erupt in episodes.  Understanding the frequency, clustering, and duration of volcanic eruptions is essential to understanding and evaluating potential volcanic hazards and, when coupled with volume and compositional data, to understanding fundamental magmatic processes.  Secular-variation paleomagnetism is the only tool available that can constrain prehistoric eruptive events on time scales of few decades.  When combined with stratigraphic and radiometric data, paleomagnetism provides critical insights into past behavior of active volcanoes. We seek a postdoctoral scientist with strong field and laboratory experience in paleomagnetism to work with geologists and argon chronologists who are developing eruptive histories of volcanoes in the western United States.
