Dear all,

Outstanding BSc (Hons) or MSc graduates are invited to apply for a PhD studentship in "Timescales of syn-eruptive magma ascent in New Zealand's Central Plateau volcanoes", offered by the Volcanic Risk Solutions (VRS) Research Group within the Institute of Agriculture and Environment, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand.

We are looking for a candidate that is going to be capable of conducting microanalytical work through electron and ion microbeam techniques, quantitative image processing, and chemical diffusion modelling. The successful applicant will have a good numerical background. Previous experience with microanalytical and/or geospeedometric methods will be advantageous.

The project is one of a number of studies conducted through a strategic partnership program between Hokkaido University, Japan, and several New Zealand institutions, aimed at mitigating volcanic hazards through advanced technologies.  The student will be based at Massey University, within two hours drive from the southern margin of the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ), and work with project leader Georg Zellmer on submicron diffusion geospeedometry and crystal-melt boundary layers. Some of the data will be acquired by the team at the Isotope Imaging Laboratory of Hokkaido University, Japan.

In addition, the student may take part in related projects on White Island and on TVZ rhyolites through program co-PIs Geoff Kilgour (GNS Science) and Phil Shane (University of Auckland), respectively, and interact with other program co-PIs and volcanologists within VRS and at Hokkaido University.

The scholarship is for three years, and will cover Massey university fees as well as a stipend of NZ$25,000 per year to cover living expenses.

Deadline for applications is Friday, 11 March, with an anticipated start date in June 2016 or shortly thereafter. Applications should be sent by email to Georg Zellmer (g.f.zellmer@xxxxxxxxxxxx) and should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, and contact details of three or more professional referees.

The appointment will be made on basis of merit.

Georg Zellmer
