Hi Folks,

On behalf of my co-conveners, I wish to draw your attention to a session devoted to REE/HFSE Deposits at the 2016 Goldschmidt Meeting in Yokohama, Japan (http://goldschmidt.info/2016/).

Session 09e: REE/HFSE Deposits: Characteristics, Ore Genesis. and Exploration

Convenors: Wei Terry Chen (chenwei@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx), Daniel E. Harlov, A.E. Williams-Jones,

Keynote:  Hong-Rui Fan (Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China)

Abstract:

Rare earth element (REE) and high field strength element (HFSE) deposits form in a variety of tectonic settings (e.g., rifts, subductions, orogenic belt) through magmatic, hydrothermal, and supergene processes. Primary deposits are either genetically related to specific magmatic suites such as alkalic rocks, carbonatites, granites and pegmatites, or have formed during hydrothermal alteration. Secondary deposits include placers and weathering residue, such as the clay deposits of SE China that currently supply much of the world’s heavy REE. The growing global demand of REE and HFSE warrants increasing interest in exploration and improved understanding of these deposits. This proposed session will bring together researchers with the current understanding of the origin, evolution and economic potential of these deposits and the enigmatic origin of the giant Bayan Obo deposit.

Please encourage your students, postdocs, etc. to contribute to the session.

The on-line abstract submission deadline is February 26, 2016.

Information on the abstract submission process is available at: http://goldschmidt.info/2016/abstracts

Should any questions arise as to the suitability of the topic for an abstract to the session, please feel free to contact either me or any of the other co-conveners.

                                                      Best regards,

Daniel Harlov
