IGC special session on redox in the crust and mantle
*****************************************************************************************************
Dear Colleagues,
Alan Woodland and I would like to bring to your attention a special session on "Redox reactions as controls on geochemical processes in the crust and mantle" that we are convening at the 2016 International Geological Congress in Cape Town, South Africa (27. Aug-4. Sept):
Redox reactions as controls on geochemical processes in the crust and mantle
convenors: Alan Woodland, Glenn
Gaetani
Redox reactions play crucial roles in many geochemical processes including those that control the global cycling of volatiles (C, H, S). Such reactions influence exchange between subducting slabs and adjacent mantle, metasomatic interactions, as well as the generation and evolution of magmas. Understanding the roles of redox reactions involves many avenues of investigation, including observational, experimental and theoretical studies. Analytical advances have provided a steady increase in available data on the distribution of redox-sensitive elements, while results from experimental studies and thermodynamic models have begun to provide a framework for understanding the role of redox reactions in the evolution of the Earth. The goal of this session is to bring together contributions reporting new results on how redox reactions may affect large-scale geochemical processes.
Abstract Deadline is 31. January
