IAVCEI Scientific Assembly 2017

The IAVCEI Scientific Assembly 2017 will be held in Portland, Oregon, August 14-18, 2017. Portland is a vibrant, affordable city in the Pacific Northwest United States, located about 300 km south of Seattle, Washington. It has an international airport served by direct flights from Asia and Europe, and direct connections from multiple points of entry in the U.S. The downtown area is served by light rail directly from the airport. The city’s location provides easy access (within a matter of hours) to many world-class geological locales that cover a wide spectrum of volcanoes and volcanic fields. August weather in Portland is typically sunny, low humidity, and with daytime temperatures around 25 degrees C. As with past scientific assemblies, the Portland meeting will host several pre-, mid-, and post-meeting field trips. Pre- and post-meeting trips will last from a few days to as long as a week. Regional field trips are being planned for locales such as Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Mount Rainier, Crater Lake, Newberry caldera, the Columbia River basalt group, Mount Shasta, Medicine Lake volcano, Lassen Peak, and Long Valley; trips farther afield may include Hawaii, Yellowstone, and the Rio Grande Rift. A website with additional information will be coming online within the next couple of months. We look forward to convening the next Scientific Assembly in Portland and hope you will attend.

Sincerely

Martin Streck

Chair, Executive planning committee
