We seek two excellent and highly motivated students for the following PhD projects:
1) Development of new geochemical chronometers to determine the timing of volcanic eruptions
2) Chaotic magma mixing: a new tool to unravel the timing of volcanic eruptions
Petro-Volcanology Research GroupDepartment of Physics and Geology, University of Perugia, Italy
Supervisor: Diego Perugini
The
projects are focused on the study of the compositional variability
triggered by magma mixing in minerals and melts in volcanic plumbing
systems before/during the onset of explosive volcanic eruptions. The
projects will combine fieldwork, electron microprobe and LA-ICP-MS
microanalysis, chaotic mixing experiments performed with natural
silicate melts, and numerical models to build new chronometers for
estimating the time-scales of volcanic eruptions.
The
PhD projects are offered as part of the European Research Council (ERC)
funded Consolidator Grant 2013 project CHRONOS: a geochemical clock to
measure timescales of volcanic eruptions.
