The  conference “VESUVIUS 2014: What progress? Scientific, social, economic, educational and cultural aimed at the sustainability of the cities surrounding Vesuvius”, held on 15 December 2014 in Castellammare (Naples), attracted more than 300 individuals and 19 presentations from volcanologists, geologists, seismologists, engineers, sociologists, students, historians, and public representatives. At the conference were not only invited local, national, and international presentations, but also the public and their representatives, for the purpose of focusing on the current knowledge and problems and, possibly, define more effective ways aimed at volcanic risk reduction that is consistent with the aspirations of the populations surrounding Vesuvius. The conference was a great success and produced an important conclusion that the current risk mitigation strategy based on the emergency strategy with the dispersion of the populations all over Italy is problematic and unacceptable. What is needed instead is a strategy of prevention that during a volcanic crisis would allow the evacuations of only selective populations into the sustainable areas around the volcano and allow for their returns whenever possible. This prevention strategy requires the realization of five points of VESUVIUS PENTALOGUE which, for your information, is posted at
